Chocolate Mocha Coffee? – Year of Living Cheap

Do you really need to visit that coffee shop every day on your way to work?  The average small gourmet coffee concoction is $4.00 a cup while the large is somewhere around $7.00.  If you multiply that by 5 days a week that is $35.00!  Now multiply that times 20 days (approximately the amount of working days in a month) and you come up with a whopping $140.00.  That is a weeks worth of groceries for a family of three.  Now multiply that times 12 and you get $1680.00 a year.  That is more than my monthly house payment!

I started making my own “home-brew” coffee several years ago.  One pound of coffee at a grocery store is between $7.00 and $9.00 depending on the brand.  There is about 40 to 48 six-ounce cups of coffee in a pound depending on how strong you want it. If you want really fine ground coffee, so it is really strong, then buy the beans and grind it yourself. Even if you buy the really expensive $11.00 pound of coffee that equals 27 cents a cup.  Now if you add creamers and chocolate syrup maybe that cup of coffee is going to cost you 50 to 75 cents….NOT seven dollars!

Now, you know when you make that coffee run on your way to work, not only are you going to get that $7.00 chocolate mocha but you will be getting that $3.00 muffin too.   Save yourself the money and calories and make your own!

Start making you own home brew every morning and save the money you would spend at a coffee shop.  By the end of the year you will have some extra cash to spend on a vacation with your sweetie!  If you insist on going to a Coffee Shop, go to a local “Mom & Pops”.  Shop Local, Shop Small Business, you are supporting people in your own community, not some big corporation.

“Behind every small business, there’s a story worth knowing. All the corner shops in our towns and cities, the restaurants, cleaners, gyms, hair salons, hardware stores – these didn’t come out of nowhere.” Paul Ryan
